Once you accept that 'St Cuthbert's cross' is unlikely to be St Cuthbert's cross, you have to account for what it might be.

This creates a large number of possibilities because the pre-Reformation Cathedral naturally contained many, many precious crosses. And the one found in Cuthbert's coffin could just as easily have come from outside Durham.
